Laying roll grass

Preparing the area before laying the rolled turf

Leveling and cleaning the substrate

Work should begin by preparing the surface, preferably using a wheelbarrow or tractor, depending on the size of the plot.

Removing unnecessary elements

The area should be cleared of stones, larger clods of earth, old tufts of turf, and weeds. A rake and shovel are best for this purpose.

Improving soil structure

In most cases this is not necessary.
However, if the soil is heavy or poorly permeable, it is worth mixing it with quartz sand to improve its permeability and structure.

Replenishment of the earth

The substrate layer should be at least 15 cm thick.
If there is a lack of soil, it is best to add light, fine-grained and stone-free field soil.

Final leveling of the surface

  • In case of larger unevenness, it is worth using a shovel or, for larger areas, a mini level.
  • A rake is perfect for final smoothing, as it will help you achieve an even and well-prepared surface.

Rolled lawn - delivery and installation

Delivery

Rolled grass should only be ordered once the area has been properly prepared. Once the lawn has been delivered, it should be laid without delay – the rolls should not remain rolled up for longer than one day.

Arrangement

We roll out the grass in strips, arranging them closely next to each other – without leaving gaps and without overlapping fragments. It is worth shifting each subsequent row relative to the previous one (on a so-called overlap), which prevents the formation of transverse lines. A sharp knife (e.g. a utility knife) works best for cutting edges, bends or corners in small spaces. On larger surfaces, it is worth using turf shears.

Rolling

After the grass has been laid but before watering, the surface should be tamped down. On small plots, this can be done with spiked grass shoes or boards. For larger areas, it is best to use a medium-weight roller.

Watering

Immediately after the grass has been laid and compacted, the first intensive watering should begin – preferably using a sprinkler connected to a garden hose. Each strip of lawn should be watered thoroughly and abundantly so that the water permeates at least 10 cm into the soil.

📌 Tip:
On hot days, work in stages: after laying out about 50–80 m² of turf, it is a good idea to immediately water and tamp it down before moving on to the next section. This will prevent the roll from drying out in full sun.

Lawn care after installation

Week 1

For the first few days after the lawn is laid, keep it constantly moist - water it daily, unless it is raining or the weather is unusually cool and cloudy. Avoid walking on the grass (unless you have special lawn shoes).

Week 2

In the second week, reduce the frequency of watering by half. After about 7–10 days from the establishment, if the conditions are favorable, you can carry out the first mowing. Remember to stop watering for 1–2 days before mowing, which will prevent fungus from developing.

Week 3

From the third week onwards, you can water your lawn in the standard mode (see the “Watering” section). After the second mowing, it is worth applying fertilizer (more in the “Fertilizing” section). From now on, your lawn is ready for use and you can walk on it freely.
